Find the right antenna for your area

Digital TV signals require better reception than analog TV signals to provide satisfactory performance (i.e. a watchable picture). If you used to get a snowy (but watchable) picture on your analog TV channels, you may find that your new digital channels do not have strong enough signals to display in this new format. Whether you live in the trees, on the plains, or in the midst of hills, make sure you find the right antenna for your individual needs.

Great choice for digital TV reception!

Great choice for digital TV reception!
I rarely write reviews for things that don't make immediately positive impressions (or horrible ones), and this was one of the positive ones. To be brief, with this antenna I now receive signal strengths between 64-74% on a couple stations 38 miles away that I didn't get before! I did a test of signal strengths among six different stations; first with rabbit ears and then with the amplified signal of this new RCA ANT1650. The rabbit ears averaged a signal strength of 51.66% (with a low of 32% and a high of 74%). The ANT1650 received an average signal strength of 90.16% (with a low - among the tested stations - of 67% and a high of 100%)! This product was also very easy to set up. I connected the antenna to the detachable amplifier with a coaxial cable and then connected the amplifier to the TV with another coaxial cable. I then plugged in the power adapter for the amplifier (it will work about as well as rabbit ears with the amplifier's power adapter unplugged), turned on the TV, did an auto-channel search, deleted some analog stations, and was good to go. The flat antenna part can be situated in a variety of ways so as to get the best signal. You can attach it to the wall with two screws, you can set it upright with a stand (kind of like a picture frame), or you can lay it flat. For our situation, it worked best in an upright position so as to avoid being heated up by other equipment. Because it's rather inconspicuous as a shape and color, it looks good as well - certainly much better than our tv's previous rabbit ears. The only thing better would be if the tv worked without this item in the first place. Here are the signal strength results from six test stations. I tested the rabbit ears on a clear morning and tested the ANT1650 on a clear afternoon of the same day. Both antennas were placed in the same location, which wasn't necessarily ideal for the ANT 1650: With rabbit ears and clear windless weather: Station A: 51% Station B: 42% Station C: 32% Station D: 74% Station E: 61% Station F: 50% With amplified ANT1650 propped vertically and clear windless weather: Station A: 94% Station B: 67% Station C: 93% Station D: 100% Station E: 100% Station F: 87% I have since done a follow-up test with the ANT1650 laid flat and it averaged slightly better at 92%, even under windy conditions. With amplified ANT1650 laid flat and clear windy weather: Station A: 89% Station B: 93% Station C: 99% Station D: 85% Station E: 100% Station F: 86% To summarize, most of the stations look and sound great with the antenna just laying flat. Once in awhile, a problem station cuts in and out, and you have to prop the antenna up. In my case, it was just one station that was problematic. Not a big deal, though design-wise, they might've made it easier to prop up the antenna by having a built-in stand swing out of the backside.

Both antennas were placed in the same location, which wasn't necessarily ideal for the ANT 1650:

With rabbit ears and clear windless weather:

      Station A: 51%
      Station B: 42%
      Station C: 32%
      Station D: 74%
      Station E: 61%
      Station F: 50%

With amplified ANT1650 propped vertically and clear windless weather:

      Station A: 94%
      Station B: 67%
      Station C: 93%
      Station D: 100%
      Station E: 100%
      Station F: 87%

I have since done a follow-up test with the ANT1650 laid flat and it averaged slightly better at 92%, even under windy conditions.

With amplified ANT1650 laid flat and clear windy weather:

      Station A: 89%
      Station B: 93%
      Station C: 99%
      Station D: 85%
      Station E: 100%
      Station F: 86%

To summarize, most of the stations look and sound great with the antenna just laying flat. Once in awhile, a problem station cuts in and out, and you have to prop the antenna up. In my case, it was just one station that was problematic. Not a big deal, though design-wise, they might've made it easier to prop up the antenna by having a built-in stand swing out of the backside.

June 14, 2011 UPDATE: This year when the leaves starting to populate the trees the signals from the TV became weaker and now the signals are weak at best. I've tried reprogramming them but that does not alleviate the weak signal. Our home is in the valley between two mountains and even a Direct TV or Dish signal will not reach us. The main signals go flying over the house and over the trees. When the signal comes in the picture and sound are fantastic.

I purchased another brand a few months ago and while its reviews were solidly in favor of its attributes I found that it was just an unidirectional amplified antenna with nothing much to praise other than the fact that it worked fundamentally well. Having a sense of perfection in some things, I bought this RCA 1650 antenna becasue of the write up and recognizing fully that some reviewers compared it to rabbit ears or worse. Upon opening the box I immediately saw that the dimensions were stated incorrectly. The antenna is NOT 1.7X8.9X2.6. It is about the size of a sheet of government paper (8X10) and about 1 inch thick. NO big thing but a consideration I had since I had the perfect mounting spot for the dimensions reported. I further expected an omnidirectional antenna and received another unidirectional antenna. Perhaps a note of disclosure would be appropriate here. We live in the valley between two mountains (hills to some until you try to climb one) next to the creek. The terrain suggests, rightly so, that any antenna would not work well and sure enough this one does not work much better than the other one as far as signal strength. Given the flat design compared to some modern art stature that looks ugly and the simple and most imporant fact that this antenna draws in most of the digital and high definition stations in this area I would have to give a significant number of kudos to the RCA compared to the other. Another slight factor is the manner in which the hardwired coaxial cable exits the bottom of the flat piece. At the bottom of the flat piece (I do not know the technical name of this but I hope you can see what I am attempting to describe) the cable exits on its way to the amplifier or the TV's connection point. The manner in which the cable exits causes it to put pressure on the flat piece in such a manner that connecting the provided stand not to work properly. An attempt to have the cable run below the stand did not work well nor did placing the cable over the stand work well either. A design flaw that should be corrected with the next model. The coaxial cable's gauge should be a bit larger in an effort to handle digital signals. In the directions it suggests that the antenna not be placed near metal so that the signal would not be diminished but it would be well worth the slight extra cost to make the cable shielded to eliminate that condition if possible. I know picky, picky. Bottom line: it works fairly well and it is better than the other one that I bought.

3.0 out of 5 stars Ok, but not great

Antenna works, but not as advertised that it catches more channels. My previous antenna seems worked better and I was able to get an additional channel. Not with this one. The direction and location seems also play a role, so I had to fiddle with it quite a while to get a suitable spot. But for location where the signal is strong enough, it will be fine.

4.0 out of 5 stars Una antena que va a la corriente eléctrica.

4.0 out of 5 stars SMALL SIZE - VERY GOOD PERFORMANCE
Reviewed in Canada on December 4, 2017
I already have a much larger but similar shaped antenna outside on the other side of my house. Interesting in that this RCA version which is so much easier to deal with indoors due to the small size is almost as good. The amplifier that comes with it manages to bring in most of the many Over The Air stations in the Toronto area. Local stations all come in clearly as well as many stations 85-90 Km. away.

Once I found an out of sight position hidden from general view, the antenna brought in the stations, it was out of sight and out of the way. Performance 80-85% of the larger antenna I have. The trick - as was the case with rabbit ears back in the early days on analog TV is to find that sweet spot in the room. Took me a while to find it but I am satisfied with the price, the small size and overall good performance.
